Horse riding

See the highlands from horseback — pre-book so we can arrange a ride for you.

There is a particular silence to a horse in the bush. Hooves on earth, not engine. Giraffe watch, then go back to browsing. You sit higher than a walking guest and quieter than a Land Cruiser, which is why horseback has always belonged to this highland country.

Sangare Conservancy offers guided horse safaris through the bush, by prior arrangement. Rides can follow the open plains, drop toward a river valley, or climb to a ridge with Mount Kenya on one side and the Aberdares on the other. The conservancy asks that riding be pre-booked — horses and a suitable guide are not standing by for walk-in guests.

Tell us your experience when you enquire. We will match the length of the ride to your confidence in the saddle and the season. A morning ride and breakfast back at Aberdare Corridor is a favourite; a longer outing can be planned if you are staying several nights. Please book before you travel, or at least a day ahead, so we can confirm the horses.
